Sep 5, 2012 by

Your house is your comfort zone. Therefore, it is necessary to do what you can to ensure that it is safe and comfortable at all times. Installing an efficient Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning (HVAC) system will greatly increase the comfort level of your house.  However, choosing the right system can be confusing, especially for ordinary homeowners like you and me.

If you are looking for the right HVAC system for your home, you can start your search with the heating system. Here are the five most common home heating systems to choose from:

  • Traditional Furnaces

A furnace is a type of home heating system designed to draw air from inside the house into a duct. The ductwork system heats the air, and then circulates it around the house. These types of heating systems are usually run either by wood, coal, oil, gas or electricity.  A filter is used to trap dust or any other air particles when the air is being circulated.  A thermostat is also installed to control the temperature in the house.

  • Electric Heat Pump

Electric heat pumps act both as a heating and an air-conditioning system that works by shuffling heat from one area to another. This heating system takes warm air from the surroundings of the house. For example, the earth, surface water, underground water or the outdoors are the most common sources of air used by heat pumps. Once air is extracted, the pump heats it and it is then circulated in the house. You can also control the temperature in the room since it has a thermostat too.

  • Steam Radiant Home Heating System

Steam radiator may be the oldest, but they remain one of the most efficient types of heating systems on the market. How does this system works?  Basically, it contains cast iron radiators that heat the water that passes through its pipes. The heat generated from the steam is circulated into the house. Steam radiators are great for warming up spaces quickly and efficiently.

  • Floor Heaters and Radiant Ceiling

Another great choice for a home heating system is floor heaters and a radiant ceiling. Unlike typical radiant heaters, these heaters use electrical elements that are installed on the walls, ceiling or in the floor instead of a blower.  It doesn’t have a thermostat that can help you determine the temperature inside the room, but you can still control the level of heat from low to high.

  • Space Heaters

Another great heating system you can purchase is a space heater. This portable heating system can be freestanding or installed to a wall. They are perfect for heating small rooms, and are usually fueled by either kerosene oil or gas.

Knowing the different types of heating systems that are available in the market will help you decide which one best suits your needs and preferences.  The lay-out and design of your house is also a factor when choosing a HVAC system.
