Insulation wasn't the only the only thing that this attic was lacking - it was also missing very important air sealing (which means that a lot of air was leaking through open cavities in the attic). The skylight was a huge source of air leakage also, so we replaced the old deteriorating insulation with 3 inches of spray foam (an air sealant and insulator). We then added in blown in cellulose insulation in order to bring the insulation levels up to R-49.
