Excluding the Groundhog from the Deck in Green Brook Township, NJ

After spotting a groundhog run across his yard and go underneath the deck in the backyard, this customer in Green Brook Township, NJ called our Nuisance Wildlife Division for help.

After inspecting the back deck, we noticed an exposed area on both sides of the steps that the groundhog was using to harbor underneath the deck. There was also a wide gap on the side of the deck too. First, we installed Pest-Blok on the long side of the deck. Pest-Blok is sturdy material that undergoes a silicone-protected polyester coating process that makes it last longer and guards the area against groundhogs and all other nuisance wildlife. Next, we installed Dig Defense® around the entire deck except for one area. Afterward, we installed a heavy-duty retrieval device over the exposed opening and enclosed it with a portion of Dig Defense® in order to safely retrieve the groundhog.

We also placed a baited device nearby. Dig Defense® is a below-ground fence system that is 15 inches deep, 4 feet across, and protects structures against invasive nuisance wildlife and feral animals. Once we safely retrieve the groundhog, we will relocate it to a new, humane location and install another portion of Dig Defense® over the opening.

Birds Get Shocking News at Their Next Visit in Butler, NJ

A commercial client of ours in Butler, NJ called us because of a massive bird issue. A flock of dirty pigeons were resting, loafing, nesting, and messing up their roof with droppings. The customer was surprised they were having trouble because another bird control service had installed a shock track system that was not doing a great job of deterring these birds from taking over their roof.

Upon arrival, we inspected the old shock track. It was completely falling apart and had seen better days. We first removed the old non-functioning track and solar box. We then installed a brand new shock track system, and we improved the layout of the tracks, putting them all the way around the entire edges of their ac unit, which was a pigeon “hot spot.” We then installed a brand new solar box to power all of the tracks. Shock tracks use low voltage to give the birds an unpleasant shock. Bird control is all about behavior modification, using deterrents to encourage certain behavior — specifically, encouraging them to find another more hospital place besides your roof as a resting spot.

After finishing the installation, we reported back to the property manager. She was extremely pleased that she no longer had a messy bird issue. Property managers are busy juggling a hundred different emergencies. Cowleys is always happy to at least take care of any bird, wildlife, or insect infestation that is wrecking havoc on their property!

Raccoon Infests Home in East Brunswick, NJ

A new customer in East Brunswick, NJ contacted our Nuisance Wildlife division after seeing a raccoon come out of her attic! When we arrived, the homeowner showed us where she saw the raccoon, which was right by the soffit at the peak of the home. As we got closer to investigate, we saw that the soffit area was damaged and found raccoon paw prints near the area. This was how to raccoon was able to invade the home.

We temporarily sealed off the access point with hardware cloth and then installed a nose cone that is attached to a Comstock device over it. The nose cone will safely guide the raccoon into the Comstock device. The Comstock is a two-gaited, heavy-duty device that features super-strong coil springs that powers the trap door. The door locks into place which prevents the raccoon from escaping. We also set up several baited devices nearby.

A short while later, we successfully retrieved the raccoon and relocated it to a new, humane environment. We then installed sturdy metal flashing over the access point to prevent reinfestation.

Bats Breaking Into the Gable Vent in East Brunswick, NJ

After seeing a number of bats fly out of his attic, this homeowner in East Brunswick, NJ called Little Rascals for help and we were sent out. After inspecting the area, we determined that the bats were getting into the attic via the gable vent.

We installed several bat cones over the gable vent in order to safely evict the bats. A bat cone is designed to allow the bats to safely leave the area, but prevent them from getting back in. After a short period of time, we removed all the bats from the home. All that's left is to prevent them from reinfesting the property!

After disinfecting the area, we went back to our trucks, fashioned a louvered vent guard and installed it over the gable vent. The louvered vent guard is made out of heavy-duty Galvannealed steel, which means that not only is it durable, but it also won't rust. Additionally, it is customized to accommodate vents of all shapes and sizes and properly secures the area from not just bats, but all nuisance wildlife and birds too.
