How do you help reduce high energy bills and make a home with cathedral ceilings more comfortable year round? You insulate the knee walls of the home with silver Glo panels and air seal the space with Zyp Foam. The old school insulation that was in this area was not working. The heat and cold from outside was penetrating at different times of year, leading to draftiness and high energy bills.
The existing insulation in Falls Church, VA was piled deep, but there was air leakage, non-consistent coverage, low spots, and it was just nasty!!!
We removed all of the old insulation, air sealed any leakage points, and blew in new TruSoft blown-in cellulose insulation for a nice, thick, even coverage.
This Arlington, VA homeowner was remodeling their home and wanted to use spray foam for their basement. Comfenergy recommended a closed cell spray foam without a thermal barrier for this project. This type of spray foam was used for its ability to be a vapor barrier. Also, the spray foam was being covered up by drywall, so there was no need for a thermal barrier.
This Arlington VA home has a design feature commonly referred to as a cantilever, where a portion of the home hangs out wider than the rooms below it leaving open air at the lowest point of the floor. If that flooring is not insulated, the external air temperatures can impact the living space inside of the home. Pictured here you can see Ariel Campos removing the external base of the cantilever and applying spray foam inside to act as insulation. This will keep outside temperatures from impacting the home and will contribute to a more comfortable living space.
This Arlington VA home had a large cantilever extending beyond the footprint of the foundation. A cantilever can add square footage for upper floors compared to the foundational floor by extending outward but the design often leaves homeowners experiencing comfort issues. An uninsulated or unsealed cantilever can allow external air and temperatures to come in through the rim joists of the home and will often result in colder or hotter than wanted floors. We remove the panels framing the bottom of the cantilever and use spray foam to seal up and insulate.
