This home's owner in Mechanicsville, Maryland made the right decision when they decided to talk to Complete Home Solutions. They knew that they already had some insulation in their attic, but didn't know how old it was. All they knew was that their home was awfully cold for having had any insulation.
After conducting our Home Energy Audit, we were able to explain to the homeowner how insulation often times isn't enough if it's by itself. What we mean is that you need to have your attic properly air sealed in order for the insulation to be effective. As you can see, the insulation that they had up there before (which wasn't nearly enough) had discolored spots, indicating that a lot of air was escaping through. So, we took out the old insulation, air sealed the attic, and installed our blown cellulose insulation. The homeowner is already noticing how much more comfortable she is in her home! We love getting the job done right!
This homeowner had some weatherization work done in their attic a few years ago, but the work wasn't carried out to its fullest potential. They had their ducts covered up (which is good) and part of the attic ceiling, but that isn't going to make this house as energy efficient as it could be. We went ahead and finished air sealing (mainly by applying polysio foam board) and blew in cellulose insulation. Now we can confidently say that this attic is efficient and will provide for a much more comfortable home.
Discolored insulation like you see in this picture is a sign of poor energy efficiency in a home. Air is not being stopped from leaking through the attic and is filtering right through, all year long. This costs the homeowner in terms of utility bills, comfort, and health. How did we fix this? We had to take out that old, dirty insulation, air seal the attic, and blow in some nice and dense cellulose insulation. This creates a great thermal barrier for the home and will ultimately make it much more comfortable and affordable!
Mike's Mechanicsville, MD home was experiencing comfort issues throughout the first floor. In the winter the floors would be cold, impacting the overall temperature of the first floor. And in the summer it seemed to constantly be damp and humid. William took the right first step by calling Complete Home Solutions to assess the problem. Upon arrival, our trained Home Comfort Specialist began his analysis in the crawl space of the home, where he discovered several key indicators of William's uncomfortable first floor. With cracks along the exterior walls of the crawl space as well as insulation that was in pretty rough shape, it was easy to determine that this was the source of the comfort problems.
On the day of the installation, our crew began by removing all of the old batt insulation from the floor joist above, before laying down our 20mill CleanSpace vapor barrier, which when bolted to the wall creates a seal on the ground of the crawls space, making sure moisture and critters can not make their way in from below. They then sprayed the area with our 2 part closed cell spray foam insulation to all of the exterior walls. The final step to this encapsulation was to install a dehumidifier which was set to a consistent 50-55% humidity. William noticed an immediate difference in the floor temperature of his home and can't wait to see the difference as the weather outside begins to change.
